About Me

Utkarsh Mandavilli

I am a junior pursuing a BS & MS degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Colorado-Boulder, where I continue to develop a wide range of technical and soft skills. I have experience with digital and analog electronics, digital and embedded systems, various coding/scripting languages, manufacturing and circuit design and testing. I work year-round for the NASA Colorado Space Grant Consortium for their project teams as a technical lead where we develop and implement engineering solutions to terrestrial and extra-terrestrial problems. I'm also a dedicated member of the CU Ultimate Frisbee team which competes at the Division 1 Level of college sports.

Lab Projects

Lab 1: 555 Timer Comparison

Comparative analysis of two different 555 timer configurations using the same circuit. Learned to use Keysight Oscilloscopes for signal measurement and analysis.

Lab 5: Voltage Droop & Decoupling Capacitors

Built a slammer circuit to create switching noise and induce voltage droop on power rails. Studied the effectiveness of decoupling capacitors in mitigating these effects and analyzed the impact of capacitor placement.

Lab 9: Cross Talk & Return Planes

Investigation of how aggressor signals create noise in victim signal return paths. Demonstrated the critical importance of maintaining continuous return planes for signal integrity in high-speed designs.

Lab 11 & 12: Trace Resistance & Current Limitations

Measurement of trace resistances using multiple methods to determine the maximum current carrying capacity of PCB traces. Critical for power distribution and thermal management.

Lab 18: Inrush Currents

Measurement of inrush currents using differential probing techniques. Analysis of how various load conditions impact current draw from power supplies, essential for power supply design.

Lab 21: Voltages from Devices Under Test

Tracking of Thevenin resistance and voltage characteristics of various power sources as load current increases. Important for understanding power source behavior and load regulation.

Custom PCB Designs

Board 1: Altium Fundamentals

Introductory PCB design project developed in Altium Designer to build foundational skills. Includes hands-on experience with surface-mount component (SMC) soldering and layout best practices.

Board 2: Layout Practices Comparison

Advanced board design featuring a mirrored 555 timer circuit configured to compare good versus bad layout practices. Demonstrates how PCB layout decisions directly impact circuit performance.

Board 3: Custom Arduino Microcontroller

High-performance custom microcontroller board built in Altium Designer, surpassing commercially available alternatives. Integrates USB functionality with an ATMEGA microcontroller with optimized design.
